Explore the breathtaking hikes in the Austrian Alps this summer

Dig out your hiking boots and enjoy a walking holiday in the Austrian Alps this summer. A paradise for hikers, on foot is the perfect way to discover the beautiful landscape of the Arlberg with a 300 km network of clearly-marked trails to explore.

Well known as the host of the Hahnenkamm downhill race in winter, Kitzbuhel in summer has a new lease of life with over 1000 km of summer hiking trails set amongst meadows and gentle mountain rivers, as well as breathtaking waterfalls. Fans of the winter Hahnenkamm downhill ski race can even hike sections of this legendary ski race during their summer family holiday in the Austrian Alps. From rustic huts to alpine restaurants, the hiking network of Kitzbuhel also has numerous places to stop for a break where you can admire the breathtaking scenery.

For lovers of art, Lech in summer is the perfect place to combine both admirations for hiking and artwork. Where art meets nature, the Green Ring am Arlberg hiking trail incorporates sculptures and art created by Daniel Nikolaus Kocher, a Tyrolean artist. Whilst exploring the Alps in Lech, hikers will come across several doors within the trail each with different designs. This artwork encourages hikers to open doors and stop to appreciate the stunning sun-drenched landscape around them.

Summer family holidays by the Austrian Lakes

Summer in the Austrian Alps would not be complete without a visit to Austria’s spectacular lakes. The Austrian Alps have some of the most scenic lakes in Europe and are popular with both tourists and locals alike for swimming in the hot summer months. Some of the most visited lakes in Austria include Achensee, Zellersee and Lake Hallstatt.

Should you be looking for an alternative to swimming, the fun experience of watersports is a great way to cool off in the Austrian Alps in summer. Enjoy a kayaking tour around St. Anton am Arlberg with both private and group courses available or take on one of the adrenaline-fuelled activities of rafting, canyoning and tubing during your summer holiday in Austria. For those visiting St Christoph, why not sail on Lake Constance with both guided and unguided tours available while the lakes of Schwarzsee and the Gieringer Weiher in Kitzbuhel also make for idyllic spots to take an invigorating swim or a gentle row along the riverside.

For families visiting Lech, children up to 14 years old can enjoy a free adventure program with activities such as scuba diving and canyoning.
