Description
Private estate with a fascinating history
Built in 1850 on the ruins of an ancient castle, Valcastello Chateau is an idyllic retreat with enchanting views of the Dolomites. Flanked by the woods of South Tyrol, the chateau is set in a private five-hectare estate which is also home to the only permanent polo club in the Italian Alps, where you can play 'Snow Polo' throughout the winter. Just a five-minute drive from the chateau is the 3 Zinnen ski resort with 115 km of slopes and five connected mountains. Plan de Corones is less than half an hour by car or train whilst Cortina is just a 20 km drive away. For non-skiers attractive snowshoe trails of varying difficulty are right on Valcastello's doorstep, as are our scenic cross-country trails.
The chateau has stunning living and dining areas, featuring floor-to-ceiling handwoven tapestries, original oil paintings, Gio' Ponti vintage furniture, Peter Beard photographs and various historical artefacts. Lofty windows provide incredible views of the Dolomites from the magnificent dining room and there is a delightful open bar where you can enjoy a drink or two.
Plenty of entertainment is on offer at Valcastello, from the games room equipped with a pool table to the Polo Club itself, which caters to polo players of all abilities.
Guests can try their hand at 'Snow Polo' from December through to March and it is possible to organise tournaments varying from friendly chukkas to corporate competitions. The chateau also has a Finnish sauna, massage room and a gym.
Valcastello Chateau is able to accommodate up to eight guests across three luxurious suites. The largest of these is the Pink Suite on the first floor, which offers far-reaching views across the Dolomites. Within the suite are two en-suite bedrooms (each with its own entrance) and a spacious living room.
The Red Suite on the first floor is the most prestigious suite, having formed the royal apartments of King Victor Emmanuel III and Queen Margherita in the 1930s. Here you will find a master bedroom with dual-aspect alpine and polo yard views and a sitting room with a sofa bed which can accommodate two children. Located on the second floor is the Blue Suite with an en-suite bedroom and adjoining sitting room with a sofa bed.
